You start by identifying the well type (dug, drilled, bored), depth, condition, and any contamination risks. This determines the method and materials needed.

Before touching the well, you confirm requirements with authorities. In Ontario, abandonment must follow Ontario Regulation 903, which sets strict rules on sealing and reporting.

Clear access for equipment and ensure safety. This can include removing well caps, pumps, piping, electrical connections, and any surface structures.

The well is often flushed or disinfected (commonly with chlorine) to eliminate bacteria and contaminants before sealing.

The well is filled from bottom to top with approved materials (bentonite clay, cement grout, or a mix. The goal is to prevent any vertical movement of water between aquifers.
Improper sealing is where most long-term problems come from.

Cut casing below grade (usually 2 feet / 0.6 m). Cap and cover with soil. Restore the land surface. File a well abandonment record with the province.
